I’m Juvenal and I write for The Watchman. I’m human. I hope you are too.

Why is this important? Because we are on the cusp of Artificial Intelligence Journalism — an AI singularity awaits. Soon it will be pervasive. Sadly many of us, including yours truly, will not notice.

As humans, dear readers, we have emotions; we understand compassion, joy, sorrow, loss and pain. We imagine, dream and create. We contemplate birth, life and the inevitability of death.

AI is none of these things — there is no humanity within AI.

I’ve lived and worked in many countries. I’ve worked at senior levels of the private sector and national government. I’ve provided expert testimony for litigation and arbitration. I’ve advised Ministers and royalty.

I have engineering degrees, have conducted industrial and academic research, have developed engineering algorithms, published engineering software and have peer-reviewed numerical analysis publications. I belong to a national American engineering honour society.

I’ll be writing regularly on AI, contemporary science, the media and related subjects in the context of current events. I do not intend to avoid controversy.

For now, I’ll write anonymously under the name of Juvenal. Why the name Juvenal?

Juvenal is credited with the Latin “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?“; or “Who will Watch the Watchmen?“ — a thought has perplexed philosophers through the ages.

Hence the nom de plume Juvenal and the name of this Journal: The Watchman.

Due to the advent of AI and the way it will change our world, please consider supporting Substack and The Watchman. Let’s work together to defeat the coming pernicious influence of AI.
